A practical OEM buyer guide to approving guitar color, gloss, surface preparation, acceptable variation and bulk finish consistency before production release.

A guitar buyer once sent a colour reference described as “dark metallic blue, high gloss.” The words looked clear enough, but they left several decisions open. How dark should the edge be? Should the metallic particles remain visible under indoor light? Was the neck meant to match the body? And how much difference would be acceptable when twenty bodies were placed side by side?
These questions are normal in an OEM project. The problem is not that buyers and factories use different words; it is that a finish can change with the wood, primer, lighting, spray direction and final polishing. A phone photograph may show the general idea, but it cannot serve as the complete production standard.
Guitar finish approval should therefore create a reference that the sample room, production team and inspector can all use. It should explain what has been approved, where limited variation is acceptable and which changes require the buyer to review the finish again.
“Blue gloss” or “natural satin” is a starting point, not a complete finish specification. Before the sample is made, the buyer should confirm the product and the visual result expected from it.

The same colour cannot simply be copied across every construction. A transparent finish over figured wood is judged differently from an opaque colour on a solid electric guitar body. For a finish where colour accuracy is important, the approval record can include a physical colour chip, a previously approved body, a standard colour reference or another agreed sample. If the buyer must approve remotely, photographs should be taken under repeatable lighting and from more than one angle. A short video can help with metallic, pearl and high-gloss surfaces because those finishes change as the instrument moves.
The reference also needs a priority. If a colour code, sample body and edited marketing photograph do not match perfectly, the production team should know which one controls the order. For transparent colours, agree how much wood variation can remain visible.
