An OEM buyer checklist for guitar assembly and setup: neck alignment, hardware, electronics, fretwork, action, intonation and final inspection.

A finished-looking guitar is not necessarily ready to ship. Assembly and final setup bring together parts made at different stages, and small errors become obvious when the instrument is played.
An OEM buyer should understand the assembly points that affect component accuracy, function, playability and the condition of the packed guitar.
The workstation needs the current production file, approved components and clear model identification. This is especially important when one order contains several finishes, pickup systems, hardware colors or market-specific labels.
Before assembly, confirm that the body, neck and finish have passed the relevant checks and that the components match the approved bill of materials.
The neck must align with the body, bridge and intended string path. The joint should fit the approved construction without relying on later setup to hide a geometry problem.
On acoustic guitars, the neck angle and fingerboard plane need to leave a workable saddle range. On electric guitars, alignment affects bridge position, pickup relationship and string location along the fingerboard.
If the geometry is outside the workable range, the team should stop and correct the cause rather than only lowering a saddle or shifting hardware.
Hardware should match the model, finish and drilling. Operators check location, seating, visible damage and secure operation without damaging surrounding finish.
For buyer-specified parts, confirm fit during sample development or first-piece review. A tuner, bridge or strap button can look similar to the approved component while requiring a different hole or mounting surface.
Electric and electro-acoustic guitars add pickups, preamps, switches, pots, jacks, wiring and battery systems. The test should cover the installed circuit:
A photo of the guitar connected to an amplifier is not a test record by itself. The factory should describe what was checked.
The nut controls string spacing, height and the feel of the first positions. On acoustic and classical guitars, the saddle also affects action and the available adjustment range.
Slots should suit the approved string specification and allow stable tuning. The team checks that strings do not bind, sit incorrectly or contact unintended areas.
String brand or gauge should be recorded when it affects the setup standard. A guitar set up with one gauge may behave differently after the buyer changes strings.
Setup values should be defined as a workable range for the product, not one universal number for every guitar. Classical, acoustic, electric and bass instruments have different requirements.
The operator reviews neck relief, string action and the remaining adjustment range. Measurements need a consistent method and should be interpreted with the strings, scale and intended playing style in mind.
Very low action can look attractive in a specification but create buzzing for the intended customer. The buyer and factory should approve a balanced standard.
Final setup is the last opportunity to catch issues from fret seating, leveling, edge treatment and neck condition. The guitar should be played across the fingerboard with normal and firmer attack.
Listen and feel for localized buzzes, dead or choking notes, uncomfortable fret ends and inconsistent resistance. Compare multiple production units; repeatability matters more than one carefully selected guitar.
Final setup should be read together with the fretboard and neck finishing checks, because a correct action measurement cannot compensate for uneven fret ends, an inconsistent neck profile or a poor transition.
For adjustable electric bridges, intonation is set according to the approved string and setup. Acoustic and classical designs use different compensation methods, but the factory can still review tuning behavior and obvious scale or saddle problems.
Tuning stability also depends on string installation, nut condition, tuner operation and the time allowed for new strings to settle. A single tuner reading does not diagnose the cause of instability.
Assembly introduces handling risk. Final cosmetic review should include the body, neck, headstock, hardware, binding, finish transitions, logo and areas around installed parts.
Buyers should approve a realistic standard for natural wood and hand-finished detail while clearly excluding damage, contamination and visible assembly defects.
If a guitar is adjusted or repaired, the affected point and connected functions need another check. For example, correcting a nut slot may require retuning and playability review. Replacing a pickup requires a new electronics test.
A useful inspection record identifies the model, date, issue, action and final result.
For a new OEM model, buyers may ask for approved setup values, photos of the first production unit, a short explanation of electronics testing and a final inspection summary. Evidence should relate to the order and protect other customers’ information.
